Former FBI head James Comey has denied the charges to making false statements to congressional representatives and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

The former director's lawyer submitted the plea representing him in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

The defense lawyer declared he would seek to have the case thrown out for multiple causes including that his client, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was indicted soon after Trump pressured his top legal official to proceed against him.

Judicial Process

In court on mid-week, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they aimed to file various legal requests to dismiss the proceedings before a trial, claiming the government's case was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully designated to assume control of the case.

The former director's legal matter was initially overseen by the original attorney, who stepped down under pressure from Trump after his probe into a different rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

James Comey appeared in positive mood as he walked into the court on Wednesday, chatting with his attorneys and making jokes. He was joined by his wife, Mrs Failor and offspring his daughter, a government attorney who the Trump administration dismissed.

Following the reading to the court read his rights and the dual charges against him in court on mid-week, James Comey was asked if he comprehended the accusations.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the court.

Historical Information

The former director was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about several months into Donald Trump's first term as president. At the time, he was overseeing an probe into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, the director sparked a counter-response from liberal politicians when he stated just shortly prior to the national vote that he was investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were never brought, causing negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government claim the former director provided false information to Congress during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he deceived the legislative body by stating he had not permitted an individual at the FBI to release to news outlets information about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also charge the defendant of "wrongfully trying to affect, obstruct and impede" the committee by making false statements to it.

Public Statements

Via social media James Comey published to his Instagram after he was charged, he said he was not guilty and charged the former president of conducting himself like a "tyrant".

"Our household have known for considerable time that there are ramifications to challenging Donald Trump," he stated. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he added. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."

The charges against James Comey came after Donald Trump shared on digital channels insisting on his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, take legal action against the former director and others.
